Hi there!

Allow me to introduce myself! My name is Valerie Carpender.  I work as both a professional model and visual artist.  But, that's not the interesting part.

I'm a dog and horse lover, a super computer nerd and I basically have a college degree on the subject of health and beauty (if there was such a thing).  But, the most important thing you need to know about me is that I am obsessed with creating beautiful art and experiences that make people happy... this has been my mission since I was a little girl.

My best friend, Teddy, and I at my art studio.

I don't remember making my first masterpiece, but my mom does!  It was a gruesome marker drawing of a purple horse-ish creature with two mysteriously unattached hooves, circa 1987.  Mom was so proud that she had it framed.  Thank goodness my skill improved shortly after this.  In first grade, I spent most of my time making 50-page hand-drawn "magazines" complete with editorials, stories and illustrations in place of photos.  I made so much art every day as a kid that my parents began to think of it as a nuisance.  Just as fast as they could sneak a pile of drawings into the trash, I'd have 30 more made. In Jr High,  I quickly learned that boring, uninspiring school projects could be fun if I begged to bend the rules a little and turned everything into an art experiment.  Algebra was the only class I couldn't convincingly do this.   Not much has changed today, I still find ways to bend the rules and make a ridiculous quantity and variety of art projects.

Becoming a model was not an intentional part of my life-plan, but it is certainly a big part of my journey.  During my first year of college, I found myself being tossed into a national model search by a well-intedended friend.   Wearing jeans, a t-shirt and flats, I felt hopelessly out of place standing in a line of girls wearing short skirts and high heels who clearly looked like they had done this before.  Much to my surprise, I won the model search.  Over 130 girls were scratching their heads as much as I was!  I would later learn that it was my simple jeans, t-shirt that helped me.  Less is always more.   I signed with an agency in L.A, then in Miami, then in New York.  The most profound lesson I have learned from my decade working as a professional model is the true definition of beauty, which I live by each day.

Today, I have worked for some of the biggest brands in the fashion world and have flown to all corners of the world to do it.   But,  I never forget who I am and where I come from.  I'm still the same girl who loves riding horses and is an artist at heart.   I create something every single day, no matter where I am. And, I still love to wear jeans and a t-shirt.

It is such a gift to be able to share my stories with you here. My hope is to teach you something new or inspire you to do something you didn't believe you could.  We are all artists of our own lives and we can paint whatever we want on our life's canvas.  I hope my blog inspires you to remember this each day.

Live thoughtfully, graciously, beautifully and of course...

Live creatively.
